Mars was the first world Terrans colonized, even ahead of Earth's moon Luna. The hardy stock of the people who carved out a new life on Mars resulted in a world that flourished faster than expected. As time went on, Mars realized its own self-sufficiency and forged a destiny independent of Earth.

Now, Mars and Earth are roughly equals. The governments that came out of both worlds -- Free Mars and Earth Works -- formed at the same time and have divided up the Sol System. They mostly get along...for now.
